Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Workshops
Throughout this academic year (2025/26), we have worked with expert trainers to deliver a series of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) workshops for students at Peninsula Dental School.
Through these sessions, students have heard directly from speakers sharing their lived experiences, taken part in discussions around case studies and scenarios, and explored materials and resources designed to build understanding of the barriers that can affect people’s daily lives.
The workshops have encouraged students to explore, discuss and reflect on the nine protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010, and to consider how dental practitioners can help ensure treatment is accessible, inclusive and fair for everyone.
key themes arising from the workshops included:
The importance of being non-judgmental
The need to be open-minded and to demonstrate empathy and respect
How reasonable adjustments can be made to improve patient care
In total, we delivered six workshops across four year groups, with approximately 300 students taking part. Students told us:
“Really good session; enabling me to reflect on my practice as a clinician and how I approach my patients, especially those with neurodiversity”
“I feel much more confident about asking certain questions to patients”
“Such an interactive workshop... thank you!”
We would like to thank everyone who gave their time to support and contribute to these important learning experiences for the dental professionals of the future.
