Making Space for September

August. The flurry of deadlines eases, projects delivery is quieter and calendars suddenly have space where meetings once lived.

For many people, it’s a chance to take a well-earned holiday, a time for rest, relaxation and reconnecting. I often find that this ‘down’ time leads to lots of ideas and creativity; when one of those fleeting thoughts suddenly becomes the ‘best idea ever!’ It’s also an opportunity to catch up on those jobs that have quietly waited all year for our attention.

We are planning for the busy autumn ahead. There are workshops to design, partnerships to strengthen and exciting projects beginning to take shape. But summer also gives us something that's often in short supply; time to think.

-          Reflect on the conversations that stayed with us.

-          Ask ourselves what made the biggest difference.

-          Consider what we might do differently next time.

This isn't always about looking backwards; it's about noticing the small moments that quietly shape whatever comes next;

-          Maybe a comment from a student or a conversation with a colleague which sparked a new idea;

-          Simply realising that our best work often happens when we allow ourselves to slow down.

Summer also reminds us how important it is to reconnect with people. A catch-up over coffee, a walk with a colleague, a conversation that starts with, "How are you?" instead of a work related topic. These moments matter and sometimes are the beginning of a new project. Strong partnerships aren't built only in meetings; they're built through trust, curiosity and taking the time to listen.

As September approaches, there’s a familiar sense of anticipation. New students will begin exciting journeys, returning students will take the next steps towards becoming professionals, and colleagues across education and healthcare will once again be creating opportunities for people to learn and grow.

We'll be there too, looking forward to another year of working alongside communities, academic colleagues, and our team of Experts by Experience.

But before the pace quickens, let’s take some time;

-          To pause.

-          To reconnect.

-          To reflect.

And to ask; What do I want to carry forward into the new academic year?

-          A new idea?

-          A renewed sense of purpose?

-          Or simply to remember that people matter and the most meaningful work grows through relationships, listening and taking time to notice one another?

Learn • Reflect • Thrive

But before you move on to your next task, take a moment to ask yourself:

Learn

What is one thing I've learned during the past academic year that I don't want to forget?

Reflect

Which conversation, experience or partnership has had the greatest impact on me?

Thrive

What is the one small action I can take forward to help me feel energised and prepared for the months ahead?

Whatever your answer, I hope the weeks ahead give you time to rest, reconnect and rediscover what inspires you and I look forward to catching up with you soon.
